Most newer cars (2001+) can do evetything through the 16 pin obc using a k+dcan usb cable. Older cars depend on years/model but many older cars use a variety of pinouts at the 20pin obc under the hood for more advanced things. You'll want a 20 pin to obc adapter and k+dcan USB adapter with an ftdi chipset (google) for older than 2001 model years. There are also a variety of settings needed on these serial adapters to get them working right. Check transmission swap threads for better info since you need to reflash using these cables and factory software, lots of detail out there. From there you can find properly made cables specific to your vehicles if you do some research. Certain cars need some additional things like pins 7-8 bridged at the obc connector, some need certain pins jumped at the 20 pin obc adapter, and some use separate ignition/battery k-lines and need additional wiring to obc pins etc.
It's pretty model specific. If you can list your model years that would help narrow it down a lot. This got me connected: I used a Windows XP computer but newer Windows versions might work, if they are 32-bit. I needed a 16-pin to 20-pin adapter for my 2000 528iT Build 9/99. Search eBay for 'bmw 20-pin'. Navistar software download. Just saw one for $1 with free shipping. FWIW: If you just want to change things like dealer options and reset service intervals, I recommend 'P.A.
'BMW Scanner 1.4'. It is much simpler and safer than INPA. It also uses a Windows computer and it can be found on eBay for a very reasonable price. Here's a tutorial: P.A.
Soft has a 16-pin connector but it is also compatible with the 20-pin adapter I described above. It worked fine in my 2003 525iT, which only has the 16-pin OBDII but I had to jump pins 7 and 8 to use it with the 20-pin adapter on the 528iT, here's more info on that mod.

Step1: Open “01_Step1” file in the root of CD disk and copy folder “EC-APPS” onto disk C: S tep2: Run the file “01_Step1 NFS Entpackt disk1 SETUP.EXE” Choose “Windows XP” and click next Choose “User Mode” and click next Choose 1 Parametrieren einer neuen Konfiguration ohne Daten ->OBD -> “Kein API-TRACE” -> “Kein IFH-TRACE” -> “Komfort(.IPO)” and click next Then press any key to continue This step Complete!
